Afternoon Tea

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea, One Aldwych

One Aldwych was an easy choice for us. My best friend was happily married there 4 years ago and the 3 of us girls have been waiting to go there together ever since. We purchased each other afternoon tea vouchers for Christmas and finally made it there today!

Upon entry our coats were taken from us and we were escorted to the mezzanine in a beautiful mirrored lift filled with lights and squares. It really did feel like we were travelling to a world of pure imagination.

Once seated, we were talked through the menu and told that we could have as much of everything as we wanted! Our savoury choices included; Quiche, Wellington, coronation chicken in brioche rolls, salmon and egg finger sandwiches.

We took no time at all finishing this and were provided with more quiche and coronation chicken on request. The quiche was easily the best I have tasted both sweet and savoury at the same time. The chicken was to die for (I think I actually had 4!)

After the savoury came the moment we had really been waiting for.

We were presented with an array of sweets sure to impress Mr Wonka himself. Candy floss, mini milkshakes, a golden egg, lemon meringue, raspberry cake pops and all the usual afternoon tea cakes. Our server talked us through all the magical sweets but left us to guess the flavour of the candy floss, and I’m keeping that one a surprise.

The golden egg was incredible with a creamy centre and chocolate outing, it literally did shimmer gold. I could have eaten the candy floss for days but thought I should save some for those that visit after us! My favourite was the lemon meringue, I literally believed I was eating marshmallows from heaven.

Before we finished we were surprised with a ‘welcome back’ cocktail as my friend had told them about her wedding there 4 years ago. This incredible elegant glass tea pot was brought over to us, with an amazing mist coming out of it, which must have been dry ice. The cocktail was hot and fruity, and pretty strong if I have to admit it. Another thing that I could have drunk for days.

We had 2 hours for our experience which was more than enough to get through everything and then some. I would say that it could be made even better with a bit more magic. I feel like there could have been more Charlie and the chocolate factory ‘elements’ like the cups and plates or table dressings for example and perhaps a cute souvenir of some sort.

Overall we had an amazing experience and were really looked after. The staff were extremely tentative and we were left wanting for nothing. They were very accommodating to my friends cheese allergy (I know, I’m not sure how she survives without cheese, I wouldn’t!) and really looked after us.

We will definitely be back. All that was missing was a golden ticket!
